A damaged cedar fence can quickly go from a small eyesore to a serious safety concern. At Microworks Handyman, we recently completed a cedar fence section repair in Burnaby, one of the many areas we proudly serve — including Vancouver, North Vancouver, and West Vancouver. Here’s a straightforward look at how our team handled the repair safely, efficiently, and with lasting results.
Contents
Step 1: Assess the Damage
The first step was to inspect the fence. The cedar boards and lower rails had suffered from rot and moisture damage, causing panels to lean and eventually collapse. Before touching anything, we made sure to wear full PPE, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toe boots, following WorkSafeBC safety standards.

Step 2: Remove the Damaged Section
We carefully removed the broken boards and rails while keeping the stable posts intact. All debris was cleared to make space for the new materials. This step ensures the repair lasts and prevents new wood from being compromised by old rot.

Step 3: Replace Rails and Boards
Next, we replaced the lower rails with pressure-treated lumber for better moisture resistance. New cedar fence boards were then installed using galvanized screws, a small detail that helps prevent rust and adds long-term durability.

Step 4: Align and Secure
Each board was leveled and secured for a clean, professional finish. We double-checked alignment along the top rail to make sure the fence looked straight and even.

Step 5: Seal and Protect
Finally, we applied a wood sealer to protect the cedar from rain and UV damage, an important final step, especially in Burnaby’s damp climate.
The Finished Result
The fence is now sturdy, weather-resistant, and blends perfectly with the existing structure. By repairing the section instead of replacing the whole fence, the homeowner saved on cost while extending the life of their fence.
